Indiana Pacers assistant Brian Shaw confirmed in a text message to USA TODAY Sports that he has an agreement to become the Denver Nuggets head coach. The Denver Post first reported the hiring.

Shaw has been on the short-list of assistant coaching candidates who were seen as head coaching material for years now, but it had begun to look like he’d miss out on this sort of opportunity yet again after the Los Angeles Clippers decided to, in essence, trade for Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers on Sunday. Shaw was a leading candidate for that position, just as he had been for the Brooklyn Nets job as well.

The Nuggets’ job became open when longtime coach George Karl was fired on June 6, this after his team won a franchise-record 57 games and fell to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. Former Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri left to head up the Toronto Raptors’ front office before Karl was ousted, and former Nuggets executive Pete D’Alessandro later took a job as general manager of the Sacramento Kings.

While Shaw is best known for his time as an assistant under Phil Jackson while with the Lakers from 2005 to 2011, he has been a rousing success in Indiana while working with Pacers head coach Frank Vogel the last two seasons. Indiana pushed the defending champion Miami Heat to seven games in the Eastern Conference semifinals this season, and he has received significant credit for the development of young players like Paul George and Lance Stephenson.
